When I do energy healing sessions for people and put my hands on them, I can feel in my body what they’re feeling in their body. This is called physical empathy. For example, if my client has pain in the back, then I’ll feel a twinge in my back in the same place. Physical empathy is very good if you work hands-on with people.
All good massage therapists and body workers have this ability, which is how they know exactly where to put their hands on you. However, if physical empathy happens outside of a healing context, without good energy management, it can be a nuisance. You might inadvertently pick up the headache of someone you are sitting next to. You can end up walking away from everyone you meet and keeping their aches and pains!
Clearing this unwanted energy from our system is one of the most important things you can learn, especially when doing Reiki. This is how you walk away from a Reiki session without taking your client’s pain home with you. We need to learn how to tell if a particular sensation belongs to you or the person that you are working on.
There are two ways to do this. You can ask yourself, Is this my sensation or theirs? You might get an easy yes or no answer this way. You could hear the answer, see it, or just know it, depending on the nature of your psychic and intuitive gifts. Or, you can ask the person, “Hey, how is your lower back today?” If the person answers, “It’s killing me, how did you know?” then you’ll know the twinge you felt was your client’s. It’s quite beneficial to practice both ways of assessment.
Asking yourself and then getting confirmation from the person will help build your confidence in your intuitive hits. You can also practice this in your daily life, independent of doing Reiki. If you feel something in the presence of another person, try it. Ask yourself, How is my head feeling? Is it my sensation or the person next to me? If you know the person in question or feel comfortable inquiring, you can ask directly, “How are you feeling?” Once you find out it’s coming from the other person, you can practice clearing it from your own body.
I have enough practice with physical empathy and energy clearing that it takes me maybe a minute or two to identify it, check in with my client, and then clear it. To get rid of the sensation, practice flushing it down your grounding cord with your breath. Review the Quick Energy Clearing Technique exercise below for more detailed instruction on how to do this. Don’t hold on to it!
QUICK ENERGY CLEARING TECHNIQUE
This technique is quick and very effective and will help you practice clearing your energy. It’s beneficial to use after you have done a Reiki treatment, but it works in any situation, whether or not you have been attuned to Reiki. It clears all kinds of energy, including other people’s physical sensations and emotions. It’s also wonderful at helping you let go of your own stuck energy and emotions.
- Take a deep breath and fill your body with light, imagining that it is coming in through the crown of your head. You are using the Universal Life Force energy of Reiki to fill yourself. Breathe the light into your heart.
- Feel your feet on the ground and feel your connection to the ground. Push your feet into the ground. You can imagine that roots are extending from the soles of your feet into the earth.
- On the exhale breath, release any energy you picked up from the other person as if you were flushing it down the root into the earth.
- You can direct your inhale breath and the light to the part of your body that is holding the sensation and emotion.
- Do this until you no longer feel the sensations or emotions from the other person.
