Ritual: Go Inward With the New Moon

This week there was new moon in the sky, did you notice it? Aha! That was a trick question! The new moon is also referred to as the dark moon because it is the only time of the month when we are not able to see it in the sky. You see on the day of new moon, the moon rises when the sun rises, and it sets when the sun sets.

The moon crosses the sky during the day instead of the night time which is why we cannot see it, because is the one day of the month when the moon is too close to the sun’s glare to be visible.

Many say that when the moon is in its “new” phase it is a good time for turning inward and a time for new beginnings. Just as the moon goes inward for a few nights a month and then is reborn again to grow in the sky, we can also take this opportunity to turn inward, to reflect and then to enter the next week feeling fresh and renewed.

Here are a few New Moon renewal rituals or meditations that can be useful to try once a month.

New Moon Goal-Setting
Since the New Moon is a magical time of new beginnings, take a few moments to recharge any goals you are working on or to set new ones. Start with a pen and paper in your favorite cozy spot. Next, close your eyes and focus on any goals you would either like to work on recharging or setting, be gentle with yourself and focus on finding inspiration for these goals. Once you feel ready, write them down with a focus on renewal and inspiration for the next month.

Meditation: Go Inward with the New Moon
This meditation is a good one to do if you are feeling the need for renewal and doing it on the New Moon is a great time. The new moon is also referred to as the dark moon because we cannot see it, but I like to think of it as “the resting moon” for symbolically it is taking a rest for a few days every month from its duties in the night sky!

For this meditation all you need to do is to take a few moments out of your busy day for rest. Find a comfortable spot, and close your eyes. Allow your thoughts to drift into and out of your mind. Be gentle with yourself and allow your body to rest in quiet awake-fullness.
