CBD for Anxiety
How can CBD help you with anxiety and is it safe?
Anxiety disorders, a group of mental-health issues, affects about 18 percent of the adult American population, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America. The organization reports that these disorders, which can include general anxiety, panic disorder, society anxiety and others, are actually highly treatable, but that few people seek treatment. One of the promising new ways to treat anxiety is CBD, so for this week’s Healthy Habit, let’s take a look.
Can CBD Help Anxiety?
As we discussed in the story “CBD Oil for Insomnia,” CBD is a cannabis compound, but lacks the chemical THC—that is the chemical that makes people feel high. In this research overview, presented by Nora Volkow, she outlines that “CBD has shown therapeutic efficacy in a range of animal models,” where it was shown to reduce stress as observed by behavior and physiology (such as a lower heart rate). She noted that in small-scale studies on human, it has been helpful for reducing social anxiety, and PTSD. New clinical trials are underway, evaluating whether a daily dose of CBD will help people with anxiety.
Why Treat Anxiety?
There’s a misconception that feeling anxious is just the human condition. It’s true that we’re all going to be anxious in times of stress. But for people with chronic anxiety, they feel stressed all the time. And this is hard on the body, releasing cortisol and other stress hormones that can boost blood sugar levels and triglycerides, reports WebMD.
Is CBD Safe?
The jury is still out, but there are also promising reports. Volkow reports, “A review of 25 studies on the safety and efficacy of CBD did not identify significant side effects across a wide range of dosages, including acute and chronic dose regimens, using various modes of administration.” Talk to your doctor about anxiety and see if CBD is okay to try.
How to Take It?
Dosing is the hard part with CBD as it’s dependent on product and person, but start slow. For epilepsy, CBD in high doses is used, but for anxiety, it’s recommended that a much lower dose is not only effective, but preferable for that condition. CBD formulations for anxiety are available as capsules, tinctures, creams, gummies, drink mixes, even sparkling water infused with CBD. The good news is, if you want to try CBD for anxiety, you can administer it however you prefer.
