How Sugar Is Affecting Your Spirituality

Consuming too much sugar harms the body, brain, and spirit. Boost your spirituality by ignoring your sugar cravings.

Even the least health-savvy of us know that sugar is not a healthy choice, not just for people looking to improve their bikini bodies but for anyone interested in living a long and disease-free life.

We hear all the time that eating too much sugar is detrimental to your health no matter how you slice it. In the short term, it leads to weight gain, mood swings, and energy crashes. In the long term, those negative repercussions can parlay themselves into accelerated aging, chronic fatigue, and obesity.

The physical ramifications of eating excess sugar are widely known and discussed; we know that it spikes insulin levels, causes inflammation in the body’s tissues, exhausts the adrenal glands, and can lead to life-threatening illnesses like diabetes.

There is, however, another danger the excess consumption of sugar poses to our wellbeing; it is far less talked about, but just as worthy of our attention. It is the connection between spirituality and sugar.

Sugar not only inhibits the healthy functioning of the pineal gland, it shuts it down. The pineal gland, the small pinecone shaped structure nestled between the brain’s two hemispheres, is known as the master gland and the seat of spirituality in the body because of its production of DMT, the biological elixir that allows for spiritual awakening.

I became intensely interested in the pineal gland recently, after a deeply spiritual plant medicine experience. My awakening with the plant medicine inspired me to continue opening and working on my pineal gland so that I could live in a more connected state of being, for myself, my partner, and my work.

This gland is mysterious and powerful, and has been referred to as our “spiritual antenna,” the “seat of the soul,” and, more commonly, the “third eye,” because it's been said to provide us visibility into higher levels of consciousness. This belief in the pineal gland’s role in mystical vision has existed among cultures across the world since ancient times, and can be explained in scientific terms by the gland’s production of the hormone melatonin, a derivative of serotonin that influences our patterns of sleeping and waking.

When we are children, our pineal glands are open and as we age, they begin to calcify or shut down as a result of exposure to toxins and excessive quantities of certain hormones. People in countries where it’s common to eat a higher percentage of processed and refined food have much more heavily calcified pineal glands than others. Perhaps this explains the spirituality deficit in America! We eat too much sugar, and it’s not just making us fat, it’s killing our intuition, better judgment, connection to the universe!

Refined sugar causes the toxicity and hormone imbalance that shut down the pineal gland. Along with alcohol, meat, fish, and fluoride, it creates excess acidity in the body, forcing your system to draw nutrients out of its tissues in an attempt to balance its pH. Overly acidic body pH accelerated the build-up of calcium phosphate crystals around the pineal gland that settle like a hard shell, literally blinding the third eye. Sugar also increases epinephrine output, which causes dysfunction in the pineal gland by interfering with its natural production of melatonin.

I believe the damage sugar does to the pineal gland is the most important reason of all to eliminate it. Eating sugar not only puts your physical health on the line, but your spiritual sight—you ability to explore and deepen your purpose in the universe. Sugar undermines our yoga and meditation practices by limiting the extent of our access to the third eye, placing roadblocks in our daily and spiritual lives.

Proper nutrition is the most impactful way to detoxify and decalcify the pineal gland, and the cornerstone of proper nutrition is sticking to a very reduced sugar intake, and ideally eliminating it all together.

Giving up sugar isn’t easy, but hopefully learning about its highly damaging affects on the pineal gland will compel and empower you to give it up—that is what this knowledge did for me.

For those of us seeking to raise our cosmic vibration, as are all of us who dedicate ourselves to the YogaLean way of life, having an impeccably functioning pineal gland is essential.

Eliminating as much sugar as possible from your diet is one of the most important things you can do for the clarity and health of your “third eye,” to find a deeper connection to yourself, and not to mention, to make it past 40 without a mean case of diabetes. Cut sugar from your diet, and I can personally assure that your heightened sense of spirituality and wellbeing will come closely in tow.

Now that you know about spirituality and sugar, read about how to decalcify your pineal gland.
