French composer Erik Satie’s work "Le Fils des Etoiles" ("Son of the Stars") is another example of stellar musical inspiration. When Satie premiered his music, he told the audience in a program note: "I demand that there be no rapturous applause . . . that the righteous flame of God may destroy the haughty and shameless." (Well, there’s no harm in asking!) As performed by the deft Swiss flautist Emmanuel Pahud and the strong-fingered Japanese harpist Mariko Anraku, Satie’s "Son of the Stars" makes us feel a meditative sense of wonder, helping us to ponder life. The rest of this disc, ethereal music by Debussy, Fauré, and Takemitsu, is equally inspiring, making for a "lovely evening" indeed.
