I'm a Believer (But Not In the Right Things)

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

During a wonderful conversation I had this morning it struck me (once again) why I have such trouble fitting in even with interfaith groups: I am not a believer.

What I Believe

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

Every once in a while it is good to sit down and clarify what you believe. I did this recently and came up with the following:

1. Everything is a manifestation of the one thing I call God.

2. God is not good; good and bad are human categories about which God cares not one bit.

Of Gods and Turtles: An Unpublished Interview

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

I’ve been giving a few interviews lately. This one, I am told, will not be published, so I am publishing it. I am keeping the interviewer’s name out of it as per his request.

Jews for Krishna

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

The fall issue of Reform Judaism magazine contains a passionate, even angry, attack on Jesus, Krishna, and John Lennon’s song “Imagine” by Dr. Ze’ev Maghen of Bar-Ilan University. The essay is adapted from his book John Lennon and the Jews.

Pewless in Seattle

Americans love God, but according to the new Barna Group survey on religion in America, we don’t care to visit him all that often.

Pretty? Pay Up!

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

I’m not wealthy, nor did I ever think I would be, but I always felt I should have more money then I do. Now I know why I don’t: I’m not pretty.

Avoid Future Disappointment and Regret

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

I love watching television. I find it both entertaining and educational. Just the other day I was watching a commercial for gold-plated faux $50 coins and learned that by buying today I could “avoid disappointment and future regret.” Now that is something worth knowing!

If I Had 1,000 Terrorists

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

“I would waterboard 1,000 terrorists to save one American life.”

That’s what the bumper sticker read on the Ford Bronco driving in front of me this afternoon. It was a compelling confession. I couldn’t help wondering if it were true.

Are You Afraid of God?

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

Are you afraid of God? Millions of Americans seem to be. Their fear is tied to their belief in eternal damnation in Hell. The Hebrew Bible, the Christian Old Testament, knows nothing about this.

Religion By the Numbers

By:
Rabbi Rami Shapiro

According to a study by University of Nebraska-Lincoln professor Philip Schwadel, the higher one’s level of education is, the broader and more liberal one’s religious beliefs become.
